UNWTO calls for increased support for tourism in the development agenda
UNWTO called for higher support to tourism in international aid flows as to maximize the growing contribution of the sector to socio-economic development. The case for tourism’s higher prioritization in the development agenda was made during the Focus Session ‘Tourism as an Engine for Growth and Development’ held at the First High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation  (Mexico City, Mexico, 15-16 April 2014).

UNWTO and the International Hotel and Restaurant Association (IH&RA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, consolidating their partnership in matters related to hospitality (Interlaken, Switzerland, 10 March 2014).

UNWTO, UNODC and UNESCO launch anti-trafficking campaign
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have joined forces to promote a global campaign urging travellers to support the fight against a number of forms of trafficking. The Campaign was presented to the tourism sector at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin (5 March 2014).

UNWTO Secretary-General commends Australia's tourism policy advances
The UNWTO Secretary-General concluded a 5-day trip to Australia where he met with federal and state government officials as well as main private sector associations and UNWTO Affiliate Members. During his visit, Mr. Rifai underscored the progress made by Australia in converging with UNWTO’s main policy recommendations: supporting travel facilitation, intelligent taxation and sustainability (7-11 February).

UNWTO contributes to Korean presidential debate on new tourism plan
Chairing the Tourism Promotion Meeting in Seoul, the President of the Republic of Korea, Park Geun-hye, unveiled plans to advance tourism promotion by boosting ‘smart tourism’, encouraging more nationals to travel and promoting capacity building in support of job creation. UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, addressed the Meeting and underscored the country’s lead in connecting state-of-the-art tourism initiatives with the sector’s potential to face poverty challenges and provide development opportunities (3 February 2014, Seoul, Republic of Korea).

UNWTO Ulysses Awards for Innovation announced
A mobile application transporting visitors to the harbor of Arromanches in Normandy, France during World War II and an ecotourism project with a social entrepreneurship focus in Malaysia were among the innovative tourism initiatives recognized by the 2013 UNWTO Ulysses Awards for Innovation. Now on its tenth year, the Awards celebrate outstanding contributions in the field of tourism across the globe (Madrid, Spain, 22 January 2014).
