International tourism exceeds expectations with arrivals up by 52 million in 2013
International tourist arrivals grew by 5% in 2013, reaching a record 1,087 million arrivals, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Despite global economic challenges, international tourism results were well above expectations, with an additional 52 million international tourists travelling the world in 2013. For 2014, UNWTO forecasts 4% to 4.5% growth - again, above the long term projections.

ASEAN countries could win up to 10 million new visitors by easing visa procedures
A new report published by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) shows that improving visa processes in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries could generate an extra 6 to 10 million visitors by 2016. The report was presented on the occasion of the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2014 (Kuching, Malaysia 17 January, 2014).

Dr. Tej Vir Singh awarded the UNWTO Ulysses Prize for the Creation and Dissemination of Knowledge
Dr. Tej Vir Singh, professor and Founding Director of the Centre for Tourism Research & Development (CTRD) in India, has been named winner of the 2013 UNWTO Ulysses Prize for Excellence in the Creation and Dissemination of Knowledge. The Award honors outstanding members of the academia for their significant contribution to the development of tourism education and research.

UNWTO gains observer status to the Enhanced Integrated Framework Board
In recognition of the importance of tourism as a key export sector for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), UNWTO has been granted observer status to the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF). The EIF is an Aid for Trade multi-donor programme supporting LDCs to be more active players in the global trading system by tackling supply-side constraints to trade (Geneva, Switzerland, 17 December 2013).

International tourism an engine for the economic recovery
In the first nine months of 2013, international tourism grew by 5% according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. The number of international tourist arrivals reported by destinations around the world increased by some 41 million between January and September, growing above UNWTO’s initial forecast and creating an important stimulus to the receiving economies.

Cambodia’s Prime Minister accepts Open Letter on Travel and Tourism
The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, affirmed tourism´s role as an important agenda item for the sustainable development of Cambodia´s tourism as he became the 13th Head of State in Asia to receive the UNWTO/WTTC Open Letter on Travel and Tourism (Cambodia, 31 October 2013).
