Spain to host UNWTO Conference on Religious Heritage and Tourism
The city of Elche in Spain will host the UNWTO International Conference on Religious Heritage and Tourism. The Conference, to be held on 27-28 November 2014 in collaboration with the State Secretariat of Tourism of Spain, will highlight best practices in sustainable development of religious tourism and how this segment can contribute to product diversification.

World Tourism Day 2014: Celebrating tourism and community development
‘Tourism and Community Development’ is the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day (WTD). The theme underscores the potential of tourism to promote opportunities for communities around the world, as well as the role that community engagement has in advancing sustainable tourism development. The official celebrations will be hosted by Mexico in the city of Guadalajara (27 September 2014).

UNWTO Executive Council: Tourism routes key to regional integration and development
The 98th session of the UNWTO Executive Council meeting in Spain highlighted the role of tourism routes in promoting regional integration and development. The Council further debated key factors to stimulate tourism growth such as visa facilitation and air connectivity while recalling the role the tourism sector can play in the sustainable development agenda (Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 5-6 June 2014).

Asia’s tourism sector commits to face up to climate challenge
The need to strengthen the tourism sector’s ability to address climate change took centre stage during the UNWTO-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) International Conference on Tourism and Climate Change. The Conference was held in conjunction with the 26th Joint Commission Meeting for Asia and the Pacific (Legazpi, Philippines, 18-20 May 2014).

UNWTO and World Vision join forces to fight child exploitation in tourism
As tourism continues to grow globally, particularly in South East Asia, it is becoming increasingly urgent to consider its impact on local communities, particular where this relates to child exploitation. This is why UNWTO and World Vision East Asia Regional Office have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, forging a partnership aimed at fighting the exploitation of children in the tourism sector (17 April 2014).

International tourism generates US$ 1.4 trillion in export earnings
Total export earnings generated by international tourism in 2013 reached US$ 1.4 trillion. Receipts earned by destinations from international visitors grew by 5% to reach US$ 1159 billion, while an additional US$ 218 billion was earned by international passenger transport.
